Xubuntu 14.04 LTS... How to upgrade XFCE 4.10 to 4.12


On this small tutorial, we show how to upgrade XFCE 4.10 to 4.12, on Xubuntu 14.04 LTS. For this, we are using the Terminal as our main tool to install.


Brief introduction...

       Xubuntu 14.04 LTS codenamed "Trusty Tahr",  was launched on 17 April 2014 and, being an LTS will be supported until April 2017. This release comes with the XFCE desktop instead of the Unity desktop and, it's one of the lightweight options available from the Ubuntu family. Xubuntu can be particularly useful, for an older or underpowered desktop/laptop. The lastest update release (at the time), it's Xubuntu14.04.4 LTS.

       Although being a fast and stable operating system, Xubuntu brings by default XFCE 4.10 version. However, it's perfectly possible to update to the latest and greatest version of the lightweight desktop environment. Just follow the instructions below.

Xubuntu 14.04 LTS... How to upgrade XFCE 4.10 to 4.12


Without further delay...

  • Open your terminal, then copy and paste the follow commands lines
    • 32bit and 64bit
      • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12
      • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/extras
      • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If you aren't happy with this new version, you can always remove the ppa.
      • sudo ppa-purge ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12
      • sudo ppa-purge ppa:xubuntu-dev/extras
      • sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
